It is bounded by Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan in the north, Mizoram and Meghalaya in the south, Nagaland and Manipur in the east, and West Bengal, Tripura and Bangladesh in the west. This strategic location makes Assam both a cultural crossroads and a vital link for trade and communication.  

The total land area of Assam is 78,438 km², which accounts for about 2.4% of India’s total geographical area. Despite being relatively small in size compared to many other states, Assam has a significant population. According to the Census of India 2011, the population of Assam was 31,205,576 (31.2 million), with 15.9 million males and 15.2 million females. The sex ratio improved from 935 females per 1000 males in 2001 to 958 in 2011, indicating a gradual improvement in gender balance. Literacy also rose from 63.25% in 2001 to 72.19% in 2011, showing progress in educational development.  

Population density is a key indicator of demographic pressure on land. In 2001, Assam’s population density was 340 persons per km², which increased to 398 persons per km² in 2011. This steady rise reflects both natural growth and migration. Historically, Assam has witnessed large‑scale migration, particularly from Bangladesh, which has contributed significantly to the increase in population density. The Brahmaputra Valley, with its fertile plains and better transport facilities, is the most densely populated region, while the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao remain sparsely populated due to difficult terrain and poor accessibility.

Several factors contributed to this rise. The expansion of primary and secondary schools across rural and urban areas ensured greater access to education. Programmes like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and mid‑day meal schemes encouraged enrolment and reduced dropout rates, especially among children from economically weaker sections. The Class‑I towns included Guwahati (968,549), Silchar (228,985), Dibrugarh (154,019), Jorhat (153,249), Nagaon (147,137), Tinsukia (125,637), and Tezpur (100,477). The classification also highlights the uneven distribution of urban centres, with most Class‑I towns located in the Brahmaputra Valley.  


Q4. Describe the trend of population growth in Assam during 1901–2011.  

Assam’s population growth over the last century has been marked by both natural increase and migration. In 1901, the population was 3.29 million, which accounted for 1.38% of India’s total population. By 1941, the population had doubled to 6.69 million. The decades 1951–61 and 1961–71 witnessed the highest growth rates of 34.98% and 34.95% respectively. This rapid growth was largely due to large‑scale migration from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) after the partition of India in 1947, along with natural increase.  

After 1971, the growth rate began to decline gradually. It was 23.36% in 1971–81, 24.24% in 1981–91, 18.92% in 1991–2001, and 17.07% in 2001–2011. This decline reflects the impact of declining birth rates, improved awareness about family planning, and some control over migration.  

Overall, Assam’s population increased nearly tenfold between 1901 and 2011. The slowing growth in recent decades is a positive sign, but the legacy of high growth due to migration continues to shape Assam’s demographic profile, creating challenges in resource management, employment, and social integration.  


Q5. Analyse the geographical region‑wise distribution of population in Assam.  

Population distribution in Assam is uneven and closely linked to geography, agriculture, and transport facilities. The Brahmaputra Valley is the most densely populated region, accounting for about 85% of the state’s population. Its fertile plains, abundant water resources, and better transport facilities make it ideal for agriculture and settlement. In 2011, the density was 470 persons/km², up from 403 in 2001. Within the valley, the Middle Brahmaputra region had the highest density (595/km²), followed by the Lower Brahmaputra (558/km²), while the Upper Brahmaputra had relatively lower density (305/km²).  

The Barak Valley, comprising Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi districts, accounts for about 11% of Assam’s population. With fertile alluvial soil and favourable conditions for agriculture, its density was 524 persons/km² in 2011.  

The Hill Region, comprising Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao, has sparse settlements due to hilly terrain, poor accessibility, and limited agricultural potential. Only 3.75% of Assam’s population lives here, with density at 76 persons/km² in 2011.

For example, the Middle Brahmaputra Valley has a density of 595 persons/km² due to fertile land and transport facilities. In contrast, the hill districts have densities as low as 76 persons/km² because of rugged terrain and poor accessibility.  

Economic opportunities also influence distribution. Urban centres like Guwahati, Nagaon, and Silchar attract people due to jobs, education, and healthcare. Migration has further concentrated populations in valleys and towns. Social and historical factors, such as settlement of tribal groups along riverbanks, also shape distribution. In terms of density, Kamrup (Metro) district recorded the highest density at 2010 persons/km², largely due to the concentration of population in Guwahati city. On the other hand, Dima Hasao district had the lowest density at 44 persons/km², reflecting its hilly terrain and sparse settlements. These figures highlight the stark contrasts in Assam’s demographic distribution, with urban centres and fertile valleys supporting dense populations, while remote hill districts remain sparsely populated.


Q8. Analyse briefly the causes responsible for growth of population in Assam.  

Population growth in Assam has been driven by two main factors: natural increase and migration. Natural growth occurs when the birth rate exceeds the death rate. Improvements in healthcare, sanitation, and nutrition have reduced mortality, contributing to steady population growth. However, migration has played a more significant role. Large‑scale migration from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) during and after the partition of India in 1947, and continued inflows in subsequent decades, greatly increased Assam’s population. Between 1951 and 2001, Assam’s population grew by 232%, compared to the national growth rate of 185%. This abnormal rise reflects the impact of migration. In recent years, declining birth rates and some control over migration have slowed growth, but the legacy of migration continues to shape Assam’s demographic profile.


Q9. Mention the different human migration streams sequentially coming to Assam since the ancient times to the present.  

Assam’s ethnic diversity is the result of successive waves of migration. The first stream was the Austric group, including the Khasis and Jaintias, who came from South‑East Asia. The second stream was the Tibeto‑Burman Mongoloid tribes, such as the Bodo, Mishing, Karbi, Dimasa, Rabha, and others, who migrated from Central Asia across the Himalayas. The third stream was the Indo‑Aryans, including the Ahoms, Koch‑Rajbongshis, and other groups, who came from northern India and Burma.
